Jackie Robinson and Malala Yousafzai

One similarity I noticed between Jackie Robinson and Malala Yousafzai was that both stood up for equality. In the biography that I read about Malala Yousafzai, it said, "She stood up to the Taliban's intimidation of ordinary people." This quote says that Malala Yousafzai stood against the Taliban threatening regular people. She wanted to go to school,

so she didn't want the Taliban killing girls if they did attend school. To stop this she stood up for her equality. In the biography I read about Jackie Robinson, it said, "Robinson also became a vocal champion for African American athletes, civil rights, and other social and political causes." This quote says that Robinson was a talented speaker for African American athletes, civil rights, and other important causes. He started speaking a few years after he went to the MLB. Both Malala Yousafzai and Jackie Robinson stood up for equality in their own way.

One difference I noticed between Malala Yousafzai and Jackie Robinson was that one stood up for girls education and the other was the first African American to play professional baseball. In the biography I read about Malala Yousafzai, it said, "She campaigned for the right to an education for all girls." This quote says that Malala tried to have the right for girls to go to school. To do this she wrote a blog to inform people of what happened when she was a schoolgirl in The Swat Valley. She stood up for girls education no matter what the cost. In the biography I read about Jackie Robinson, it said, "Robinson later moved to Florida to begin spring training with the Royals, and played his first game in Ebbets Field for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947 becoming the first black player to compete in the Major Leagues." In the quote it says that Jackie Robinson started with the Royals becoming the first black player to play in the MLB.

Jackie Robinson

Jackie Robinson was courageous because he had the courage to say "no". For example, the text states that, " Branch Rickey knew there would be difficult times ahead for the young athlete, and so made Robinson  promise to not fight back when confronted with racism." This quote shows that Rickey made Jackie promise to not fight when people scolded him. It would be hard because the people made Robinson very angry. He had to say no to fighting.

Also, Jackie Robinson was courageous because he had the courage to take a hit. In the biography I read, it says, "People in the crowds sometimes jeered at Robinson, and he and his family received threats." According to this quote, it says that when Jackie played baseball people would call him names and threaten him. He had to go through all of this so he could play baseball in the MLB. In order to be the first African American baseball player he had to take a hit for what he loved.

"Life is not a spectator sport. If you're going to spend your whole life in the grandstand just watching what goes on, in my opinion you're wasting your life."
     -Jackie  Robinson

This quote is saying that you have to take risks and live in the moment. To take action is also what it is saying. The quote speaks to me because I want to make a difference in the world not just sit to around and watch. I can relate to what it is saying because I myself want to follow this quote threw out my life. I agree with it so much because when it says that you shouldn't just watch what goes on, but to take action is really what I believe.

My book Al Capone does my shirts"

My book

The book I am currently reading is called Al Capone does my shirts. This book is about a boy who lives on Alcatraz during the 1930s. The main characters name is Moose, he has a little sister Natalie, who is autistic. They moved their so Natalie can go to a special school. There are many different conflicts in the book, such as school trouble, baseball trouble, family trouble, friend trouble, and criminal trouble. So far a big problem is when the warrants daughter, Piper, has a plan to let the students pay to have their shirts washed by Al Capone. After they get busted because it is against the rules.

What is the moral in the book?

The moral of the book is to find what you really love, and when you feel upset take that thing and cherish it. Moose has a very hard life and he loves baseball. In the story for example, when he plays baseball it makes all those feelings go away. So when he is at bat all he can think about is the ball, it is his relief.

Where I am in my book, and where in the plot diagram

What is a plot diagram?

A plot diagram is a diagram that explains the plot. The very beginning is the Exposition, this is when they introduce the characters and setting. Next is the Rising Action, this is when the tension is starting to rise. The Climax is next, this is the most exciting part. This is the part that will influence the end of the story. When the problem is or isn't solved, the Falling Action begins. This is when the tension is going down, and the story is unraveling. Finally the Resolution, this is the end of the story.

The part in my book

The book I am reading is called when you wish by Kristen Harmel. In my book I am at the very end of the Rising Action. The main characters name is Star Beck. (Her mom changed her name.) She is the most popular girl in America. When she finds out that her mom has kept the letters her dad sent her, she goes furious. She sets off to go find her dad, then she finds out that he might have moved on. I know that I am in the Rising Action because tension is forming.

Conflict in Mocking Jay

 Man vs Society

I see Man vs Society in my book. Man vs Society is when a person goes against a culture or way of life. The main character in my book, Katniss, has to destroy the capitol and become the Mocking Jay. They are called the rebels because they are going against the whole country. She has to face external conflict when she fights in wars. By becoming a rebel she has change physically and mentally.

Man vs Self

I see Man vs Self in my book. This is when a person has to make a decision, has a mental illness, or is at war with themselves. In my book Katniss has to fight with people, but also herself. When some of the people in her life die, she must fight through it. She is fighting internal conflict. Like in the very end she goes through depression. She than is uplifted by someone.

Mocking Jay By: Suzanne Collins

Who is the main character?

The main characters name is Katniss Everdeen. Katniss lives in District 13, but was born in District 12. She went through the Hunger Games twice, but escaped the 2nd time. I would say her personality is stubborn, kind-hearted, she HATES the capitol, but means well. She lives in a country named Panem. They are about to fight in a war because of Katniss. She has to become the Mocking Jay.

The prediction of the climax

I predict that during the climax, she will be fighting against President Snow. She might kill him. In order to solve the conflict she will have to go in the capitol get Peeta, kidnap Snow, destroy the capitol, and later kill Snow. It will be exciting because this is the final book of the series and I hope it will have a decent ending.( Meaning that they don't all die!) I hope that my main character will change Panem and will not die.

What is point of view and how does it effect a story?

Point of View

  • Point of View is the perspective of which the story is being told and who is telling it.
  • 1st Person Point of View is when a character is telling the story throughout heir eyes. They refer to themselves as "I"
  • 3rd Person Point of View is when a character that is not in the story is the narrator.
  • 3rd Person Point of View is when a character that is not in the story is the narrator.

How does it effect a story?

This is another kind of point of view.
I see an old woman and a young woman.
What do you see?

Well it effects the way you see things, like a different perspective. So if it is 1st person than you might get more details on the persons life. Or their specific opinion on some things. In 3rd person you could get more opinions because you are the voice for other people.

What is direct and indirect characterization? In a 6-8 sentence short story, use both direct and indirect characterization to bring a character to life.

What is direct and indirect characterization?

Characterization is how the author gives the character personal traits. Direct characterization is when the author directly gives you the personal traits of a character. For example " The girl is bored," That is a direct characterization because I am telling you exactly what she feels. Indirect characterization is when the author gives you clues on characterization. Like for example " The girl plays with her pencil, not, paying attention, and is half asleep." That is not telling you she is bored just clues to explain how she is acting.

The Girl

People whisper while while she comes in. All eyes are on her. On her face has dirt and scratches. The clothes she is wearing are ripped and dirty. She barely ever speaks, so people spread rumors about her. Ugly rumors. "She is the homeless girl, the girl who lives by herself with no family," These are only rumors, but rumors that might be true.

What is a plot diagram, and how can it help us predict the outcomes of a story?

A plot diagram is a visual of the exposition, rising action, climax, and resolution. The plot is the main events in which happens in a story. Exposition is the beginning where the setting, characters, and background history are revealed. The climax is the most important, most exciting moment in the story. Of course the resolution is the moment when you see if the story ends up the way you want it to end. Like if it had a happy ending or a bitter last sentence.

By using a plot diagram it can help you predict the outcomes of a story by seeing what comes next. Like for example if I had a plot diagram for my book I just recently read I would have known when the exposition would have ended. So then I would see when thing would start picking up pace into the rising action. Also it helps you by recognizing what is happening. It is doing this so when you don't get where you are, the plot diagram will help you.

What are the 4 types of conflict, and why does every story we read have conflict?

What are the 4 types of conflict, and why does every story we read have conflict?

The 4 types of conflict

1. Man vs Man - a conflict that involves multiple people fighting.

2. Man vs Nature- a conflict that involves a person that fights nature or has to deal with nature.

3. Man vs Society- a conflict that involves a  person against a group or culture.

4. Man vs Self-  a conflict that in involves a person trying to decide or make up their mind.

Why does ever story we read have conflict?

Every story we read has conflict, if it didn't the story would be very boring. It would be boring because there would be no suspense or action. Like in the Hunger Games, if Katniss and her sister never got picked then they wouldn't meet new people, change the games, and there wouldn't be another book. It also must have conflict so there would be a moral to the story. In conclusion if you didn't have a conflict then the story would be dull and boring!
